Introduction

The single-cycle Master’s Degree Course in “Medicine and Surgery” (qualifying for the profession of Physician and Surgeon), responds to a growing demand for professionalism in the field of medical and health sciences, interpreting the needs of the territory and the community, and providing a broad and structured educational path that covers different areas of application.

Carreer opportunities

General surgeons can work in private practice or in continuity of care roles. To complete their training, they can apply (through selective tests) to specialisation schools in the medical, surgical and services areas or to training courses in general medicine.

Career opportunities include:

  1. a) work in National Health Service facilities, public bodies and state or private companies
  2. b) work in private practice (a medical specialisation diploma is required to practise as a specialist and completion of the training course in general medicine is required to practise as a general practitioner).
  3. c) research in the preclinical or clinical field.

The practice of the profession is regulated by state law.

Overview

The course provides solid theoretical and practical knowledge in the hospital and community settings. The integration of knowledge allows students to acquire a multidisciplinary and innovative view of the most common health and disease problems and a humanistic culture that responds to new healthcare needs centred on a holistic view of the individual.

Medical surgeons can work in private practices or hospitals, within the National Health Service (SSN in Italy) as general practitioners or specialists in public clinics or hospitals, in scientific research at universities or research institutions, or in national or international humanitarian health organisations.

Expected Skills

Grounded  on strong secondary school foundations, Biological Sciences graduates will have knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of biological studies at a level that is characterized by the use of advanced textbooks and that also includes knowledge of some cutting-edge topics in the hierarchical organization of living things, from cells to organisms. The teaching tools used for the development of such knowledge are:

 

  • face-to-face lectures;
  • laboratory activities by the professors, assisted by staff with technical functions;
  • tutoring supports provided by the departmental system;
  • e-learning software available on the University website.
