The course provides theoretical and practical knowledge for the assessment and management of processes in biological systems, with particular focus on the conservation and management of biodiversity and the environmental sustainability of production activities, in line with the sustainable development goals defined by the UN’s 2030 Agenda.
The course prepares students for careers as biologists, researchers and graduate technicians in biological sciences and aims to train “sustainability managers” with skills that are useful in various fields: public and private research institutes, industry, healthcare and public administration, and non-governmental organisations.
The course aims to provide students with advanced knowledge and tools for in-depth study of issues related to the study, control and management of biological processes, and particularly environmental sustainability. The programme provides students with a solid education in the various aspects of biology, ecology and its applications, as well as a high level of proficiency in the scientific method of investigation, enabling graduates to work with a high degree of organisational autonomy. The programme is characterised by courses focused on environmental issues and sustainable development.

Admission requirements
To be admitted to the Master’s Degree Course in Biology for Sustainability, applicants must hold a three-year degree in class L-13 or L-32. Graduates must also meet the following admission requirements:
 – at least 12 ECTS credits in courses in the following scientific disciplines: MAT/01-09, FIS/01-08, INF/01, INGINF/05;
– at least 12 ECTS credits in courses in the scientific disciplines: CHIM/01-02-03-06;
– at least 48 ECTS credits in courses in the scientific disciplines BIO.
The assessment of personal preparation will be carried out in accordance with the procedures defined in the course regulations. Students who wish to enrol in the Master’s Degree programme in Biology for Sustainability must take a test to assess their personal preparation. The test will consist of an oral interview, with a suitability assessment, aimed at ascertaining the adequacy of the candidate’s personal preparation.

Internships and Placements
The programme’s teaching staff identify universities, research institutions, public bodies and companies (both national and international) with which to enter into agreements for the provision of internships and placements.

Final Exam
Students enrolled in the Master’s Degree Programme in Biology for Sustainability will be required to complete, under the guidance of a supervisor, an experimental thesis reporting the results of scientific or technological research.
The final exam for the Master’s Degree in Biology for Sustainability consists of a public presentation of the results of an experimental thesis using computer-based slide projections in front of a committee composed of the course lecturers, aimed at assessing the level of technical, scientific and professional preparation achieved. At the end of the presentation, the candidate will respond to any requests for clarification and questions posed by the members of the Commission regarding the topics presented
